Members of the Climate Justice Action Group of Gauteng pretesting nuclear energy.

A powerful new report has emerged from a coalition of twelve civil society organisations spanning Africa, Europe, and Russia, at this year’s Bonn Climate Conference SB62. Titled The alarming rise of false climate solutions in Africa: the nuclear energy misadventure, this timely publication scrutinises the growing trend of African nations turning to nuclear energy as part of their energy strategies.

With countries like Angola, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Rwanda among those announcing plans for new nuclear power plants, the report raises urgent questions about the risks, costs, and long-term sustainability of nuclear energy on the continent. It offers a compelling critique of nuclear energy as a false solution to the climate crisis and presents a unified call for a nuclear-free Africa – one powered by clean, affordable, and socially just alternatives.

Earthlife Africa Johannesburg Director, Makoma Lekalakala says, “The people’s demand for a #justtransition to a post-carbon economy means it must be green, sustainable and socially inclusive. The comprehensive nuclear report lays out the case for why the nuclear option is not compatible with these demands. It shows how much nuclear energy lobbying undermines and obstructs the deed for net-zero to be achieved by 100% clean sustainable renewable energy.”
