Focus on the #JustTransition: According to Earthlife Africa’s Program Coordinator Sibongile Ndlovu, the eco-justice organisation will ramp-up efforts even more in 2022. She says, “In the various communities (from Orange Farm, Tembisa, Vosloorus, Gqeberha, Uitenhage) participants were engaging well and seemed to understand the issues even though it was the first time they had a just transition dialogue in their community.” Read more here…
Public participation is critical to an improved future: On 17 January 2022, the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) kicked-off its public hearings on Eskom’s Fifth Multi-Year Price Determination (MYPD5) revenue application for the 2022/23 financial year. Earthlife Africa Johannesburg and others were there to call on the Regulator to reject Eskom’s request for a 20.5% increase in electricity tariffs, due to the crippling impact it will have on citizens. SONA should have given clearer targets for a #JustTransition: While we acknowledge the President’s references to climate change and the just transition, in addition to the ramping-up of renewable energy (RE) production, it was unclear from his State of the Nation address what future renewable energy targets the country would pursue. We really would have liked the President to be more explicit about the long-term renewable energy plans as they relate to the just transition. Read more here…
