It’s been just over a month since our team returned home from the heart of Gqeberha, following a transformative Strategic Planning Conference. This was more than just a gathering – it was a powerful convergence of activists from Limpopo, Gauteng, and Eastern and Western Cape, all united in their commitment to climate justice, environmental advocacy, and sustainable solutions.

A Visit to Zwide: Strengthening Grassroots Activism

One of the most inspiring moments of the conference was our visit to Zwide, where we engaged with the Eastern Cape Energy and Climate Change Forum. This interaction wasn’t just about sharing ideas – it was about energising the movement and reminding communities that change is possible.

Climate change has left deep scars in this region – recent floods displaced families, leaving homes without running water for months. But despite these challenges, the spirit of resilience was unmistakable.

We got critical insights into the debate on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), explaining why they are not a viable solution for South Africa’s energy needs or for combating climate change. Participants also received a valuable, free booklet filled with crucial information on the topic.

Adding to the richness of the experience, we had the privilege of working with talented, local digital storyteller, who brilliantly captured the energy and passion of our engagements in Zwide. Her work is a testament to the power of storytelling in activism – a tool that continues to inspire communities to take action. Keep shining, Nokuthula! #DigitalStoryteller #CommunityAction

Communities in Action: Shared Struggles, Collective Strength

This year’s strategic planning wasn’t just about reflection – it was about mapping the way forward. Observing and adapting to challenges, is another powerful theme that emerged from our conversations, which were raw, honest, and deeply necessary.

From grassroots movements to policy advocacy, our focus remains on:

  • Championing climate justice through community-led initiatives.
  • Strengthening grassroots activism to amplify local voices.
  • Promoting sustainable and inclusive solutions for communities most affected by climate change.

Igniting Leadership, Embracing Responsibility

A key part of our discussions revolved around leadership. How do we grow as leaders who listen – not just with our heads (logic), but also with our hearts (emotion) and feet (the will to act) AND who question (for clarity and feedback)? We explored the power of authenticity, reflection, preparation, adaptability, and most importantly, response-ability – the ability to respond effectively to challenges.

A Just Transition for All: The Road Ahead

The fight for climate justice is far from over. Many more communities need information and education about the Just Transition, and we are working hard to build a movement that is inclusive, sustainable, and driven by the people; encouraging action for a sustainable future. Our communities deserve clean air, access to clean running water, and a healthy planet – not just for today, but for future generations.
