Welcome to Episode 3 of Earthlife Africa’s short-video series, Our Planet, Our Responsibility: Environmental and Climate Justice in Action.
In Episode 2, we Explore South Africa’s Legal Framework for Environmental Protection. Now we will look at climate change and its impacts. Human activities, particularly burning fossil fuels, release greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄), which trap heat and drive global warming. This warming affects the climate.
In episode 3 of our series the basics of climate change is the main topic of discussion.
????️ Impacts of Climate Change:
- Extreme weather patterns: floods, droughts, and heatwaves.
- Melting ice caps and rising sea levels.
- Ocean acidification, harming marine life.
- Disrupted ecosystems and biodiversity loss.
Here in South Africa, we’re already seeing the effects: prolonged droughts, flooding, and soil erosion that impact food security, livelihoods, and coastal ecosystems.
???? Tackling Climate Change:
South Africa has committed to reducing emissions through initiatives like the Climate Change Act, the Just Energy Transition Investment Plan, and the Paris Agreement. But global cooperation and climate justice are essential to addressing this shared crisis.
