Welcome to Episode 2 of Earthlife Africa’s video series, Our Planet, Our Responsibility: Environmental and Climate Justice in Action.
Following on from Episode 1 – Why Protect the Environment? – we explore South Africa’s robust legal framework for environmental protection, starting with Section 24 of the Constitution. This section guarantees every citizen the right to:
- A healthy environment that supports wellbeing
- The protection of natural resources for current and future generations.
A snippet of the showing the title and topic of discussion.
At the heart of this framework is the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA), which, along with related laws, addresses critical areas like biodiversity, water, air quality, and waste management. These laws ensure sustainable resource use while minimizing harmful impacts on communities and ecosystems.
Equally important are energy-focused laws that support the transition to renewable energy, alongside frameworks that promote public participation, transparency, and accountability.
