Regulations & EIAs
With the existence of legal frameworks in a society, the environmental struggles are also fought out in courts. As more and more information about non-compliance with and disregard of existing environmental legislation is unveiled, we see increasing numbers of respective court cases. Earthlife Africa encourages communities to consider legal action against environmental injustices as an important element of their struggles.
This section presents some of Earthlife’s work around environmental injustices addressed through the existing legal frameworks. It is also a living page, increasingly holding information, legal documents and regulations with regard to environmental and thus social justice.
Currently Earth Life Africa is involved in:
- A campaign to prevent yet another coal-fired power station to pollute the Lephala area in Mpumalanga province: Anglo American’s and Vedanta’s plans for a new climate changer
- Challenging Eskom’s unsustainable and harmful practice of burning coal to generate electricity
- Working around procurement as financing and procuring energy sources in a resource constraint world becomes a more and more tangible problem
