Earthlife Africa Jhb and SECCP intensify their work around procurement as financing and procuring energy sources in a resource constraint world – and especially in cash-strapped countries – becomes a more and more tangible problem. This section holds Earthlife Africa Jhb’s and SECCP’s discussions, conclusions and recommendations from their research into the procurement and the financing of energy choices.
Furthermore, this section holds information about current processes and developments on procurement issues.

News on procurement processes and developments:
- Earthlife Africa Johannesburg made a submission on the IRP 2010 Update Report based on to the Thomas Report which explores and analyses the government’s Integrated Resource Plan for the electricity industry.
- Earthlife Africa Johannesburg made a submission on the ‘Budget Appropriation Bill: Proposed Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Investments’ to the Portfolio Committee on Energy and the Standing Committee on Appropriations. The submission includes distinct and self-contained legal and economic sections. Earthlife Africa also requested permission to make an oral submission to the Committee.
- Finally, the South African Government – namely the Department of Energy (DoE) – acknowledges the need for a new study on the cost of nuclear power. The DoE put out Terms of Reference for this study. A compulsory briefing session was held on 13 May 2013 at the DoE in Pretoria.
- On January 30 2015, Environmental law shared a letter of concern on behalf of Earthlife Africa (ELA) JHB and South African Faith Community Environmental Institute (SAFCEI) regarding the National Nuclear Power Development Programme – Planning and Procurement of 9.6GW of nuclear power stations with the minister of Energy.
- On February 10 2015, Environmental law served the minister of Finance with a letter regarding the National Nuclear Power Development Programme – Planning and Procurement of 9.6GW of nuclear power stations, as well as the minister of Public Enterprises with another letter regarding Energy Crisis and National Nuclear Power Development Programme – Planning and Procurement of 9.6GW of nuclear power stations, on behalf of ELA JHB and SAFCEI.
