Mining threatens Mapungubwe World Heritage site in South Africa

An Australian mining company, Coal of Africa Ltd, has started activities in a sensitive area without a water use license and with what many environmental experts consider to be an inadequate environmental management plan. Coal-fired power stations linked to serious health defects in children

Uranium and other heavy metals from coal can pollute the soil, water and air. In India the long-term effects of such pollution are now being seen. In an area close to two coal-fired power stations, there are a significant number of children with growth defects and mental disabilities. Studies indicate that such conditions are a result of the heavy metal pollution from the coal. However, the authorities seem not to be taking the findings seriously.
