Civil society demands action on acid mine drainage

Over 40 civil society organisations sent a letter to the Inter Ministerial Committee on Acid Mine Drainage (IMC) raising concerns about the IMC’s activities and lack of action to deal with the acid mine drainage (AMD) crisis. Millions of litres of toxic water, polluted with heavy metals, including uranium, continue to flow into the groundwater and river systems in the Johannesburg region. The consequences of this AMD are potentially devastating for people’s health, environment and livelihoods.

Unless an adequate response is received by 2 February 2011 the organisations will investigate taking legal action against the government. See: Civil Society Media Statement re acid mine drainage 25 Jan 2011
